Shadow Program Placements

**Exlusive to Canadian Chapter of IECA members**

The Shadow Program:

Our Shadow Program  provides students and young professionals with one-day placements at leading companies in the industry, in which the individuals will shadow professionals and experience hands-on tasks in the workplace and field.

How to Apply

Email info@canieca.org with your choice of placement, a copy of your resume, and answers to the following questions:

This Pilot Placement by GEMS Inc.

We are looking for students who are actively seeking opportunities in the industry to network and get involved. This pilot placement will be the featured for the rest of the program so we are looking for eager students who are willing to help promote and improve our program by writing about your experience.

Placement Option 1

Date and Time: Wednesday, March 1, 2017. 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

Company: Groundwater Environmental Management Services Inc.

A Cornerstone Member of IECA and is an Environmental Specialist for the Construction Industry.

Location: Maple, Ontario

Job Theme: Erosion and Sediment Control, Water Quality Sampling and Environmental Auditing

Description: Complete a full day of environmental auditing on a large Regional Infrastructure project in Milton

Itinerary:

7:30-8:30: Welcome, orientation, safety basics training at office.

8:30-12:00: Travel to job site. Inspection of construction shafts, work areas, water

quality and treatment systems, and monitoring of groundwater levels

12:00-12:30 Lunch break

12:30-3:00 Monitoring of nearby watercourses and finalize inspection on the construction site. Collection of water quality samples including proper procedure review and submission to the lab

3:00-4:30 Return to office; Prepare draft report of the day’s activities

4:30 End of day

Requirements:

Student must bring their own safety boots that are CSA certified.

* Arrange for own transportation to/from GEMS office

* Bring packed lunch

* Wear warm thermal layers and clothing and water-resistant winter jacket and warm gloves for outdoor field work

* GEMS will provide hardhats, safety glasses and safety vests

Placement Option 2

Date and Time: Thursday, March 2, 2017. 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

Company: Groundwater Environmental Management Services Inc.

A Cornerstone Member of IECA and is an Environmental Specialist for the Construction Industry.

Location: Maple, Ontario

Job Theme: Environmental Monitoring, including Groundwater Levels, Water Treatment and Watercourse Protection

Description: Complete a full day of environmental inspection duties on a large Region of Peel Infrastructure project spanning several kilometers

Itinerary:

7:30-8:30: Welcome, orientation, safety basics training at office.

8:30-12:00: Travel to job site for Site Specific Safety Training and Inspection. Review environmental drawings compared to those installed on site. Full site inspection review: meet and discuss issues with Contractors in real time in the field

12:00-12:30 Lunch break

12:30-3:00 Completion of Inspection, Collection of water quality samples and proper drop-off procedures at the lab

3:00-4:30 Return to office; Prepare draft report of the day’s activities

4:30: End of day

Requirements:

8:00-9:0: Introduction to Aquatech team and breif description of today’s activity

9:00-12:00: Overview of current and previous jobs and experience related to water treatment and monitoring

12:00-1:00: Lunch

1:00-5:00: Hands on experience with design, calculations and implementation of water treatment systems

Description: Visit active construction sites to apply stream restoration and protection knowledge

8:00-10:00: Review of jobs in progress and site planning – to be done at R&M’s office in Acton

10:00-12:00: Site visits

12:00-1:00: Lunch on the road

1:0-3:00: Site visits

4:00: Return to R&M yard and debrief
